Move over, Jackie and Lee. The unofficial (and totally made-up) title of The Most Stylish Sisters of 1954 goes to Betty and Judy Haynes. These savvy and sensational showbiz siblings prove the veracity of the famous Coco Chanel quote: “Fashion changes, but style endures.”
Bombshells in Blue
Their styles are different, but, as befits a sister act, complementary. Betty (Rosemary Clooney) is chic but serious; this perfectly suits her role as the mother hen elder sister. Judy (Vera-Ellen), the irresponsible kid sis, is kicky and fun on-stage and off; her wardrobe definitely fits her attitude. They both know how to dress, with panache, elegance, and personal style, for any occasion that presents itself. Proof of this can be found in the following fashion show…

Sorry, Haynes Sisters. The best-dressed person in White Christmas is The General. His rugged and streamlined look can’t be beat. He gets bonus points for being at ease with himself. What is more fashionable and timeless than that? You can keep your Most Stylish Sisters of 1954 title, though. It’s well-deserved.

Great post again! I think I am enamored with Vera Ellen’s yellow rehearsal outfit in the “Abraham” number. Danny Kaye’s matching yellow sweater in the same scene is pretty snazzy, too. The imaginative use of color in this film is incredible. Way to go Edith Head along with the art direction department! I also enjoyed George Chakiris’ all black ensemble in the dance number with Rosemary Clooney at the Carousel Club. Where is that time machine? I need new (vintage) clothes to take that trip, though. 😀

I don’t know anything about time machines, but I can tell you that when you fall through the looking-glass you’re automatically dressed appropriately for the year on the other side!
